LUMS Marks 75 Years of Pakistan-China Diplomatic Ties with High-Level Commemorative Event

LAHORE: LUMS marked the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China diplomatic relations with a high-level event organized by the Parvez Hassan Centre for Chinese Legal Studies at the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law (SAHSOL). The university brought together academics, lawyers, business leaders, policymakers, and members of the Chinese community in Pakistan.

The event highlighted the long-standing strength of Pakistan-China relations. It showed how the partnership has evolved into a broad-based cooperation covering strategic, economic, and people-to-people ties. In addition, speakers stressed the importance of academic institutions in promoting dialogue, legal understanding, and cross-border collaboration.

Chinese Consul General in Lahore, His Excellency Sun Yan, attended the event as the chief guest. His presence reaffirmed the importance of bilateral relations. Moreover, he highlighted their expansion into education, culture, and institutional cooperation.

To further strengthen academic ties, the Consulate General of China awarded scholarships to LUMS Law students Laiba Abid and Jalal Tarar (Class of 2027). This initiative reflects a shared commitment to education, capacity-building, and long-term collaboration.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Sun Yan noted the evolving scope of cooperation under the upgraded CPEC 2.0 framework. He emphasized collaboration in economic development, technology, green growth, regional connectivity, and academic exchange.

Similarly, participants discussed the long-term trajectory of Pakistan-China relations. They noted growing cooperation across multiple sectors. They also underlined the role of universities in sustaining institutional linkages and informed dialogue.

Founder of the Centre, Parvez Hassan, stressed the importance of institutional development. He said infrastructure projects build physical links, but institutions sustain lasting partnerships. Therefore, he highlighted the need for scholarship, mutual understanding, and shared learning between societies.

The event also included senior academic and industry figures. These included LUMS Rector Shahid Hussain, Provost Dr. Tariq Mahmood Jadoon, SAHSOL Dean Dr. Sadaf Aziz, and several business and policy leaders from Pakistan and China.

Finally, the gathering concluded by reaffirming the importance of continued academic cooperation and stronger institutional engagement between the two countries.
